Metformin is a biguanide antihyperglycemic agent.[6] It works by decreasing glucose production by the liver, by increasing the insulin sensitivity of body tissues,[6] and by exerting an anorexiant effect, thereby reducing caloric intake.[14]
In 2017, it was the fourth-most commonly prescribed medication in the United States, with more than 78 million prescriptions.[18][19]
